John Frederick Peto
Student’s Materials
circa 1890–1900
Oil on canvas

Artist statement: This is a painting of contrasts. The canvas is flat, yet the books and objects push forward beyond the canvas. The arrangement of the student’s materials are in an organized disarray. The material’s represent the presence of some student, yet that student is not present in this painting. These worn and used objects are representations of a personality, interests and ambitions.

Artist bio: I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I attended Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and have contributed to many student exhibitions before.
